Research

Each year, as part of Alcohol Impact, NUS runs a survey to uncover student attitudes, behaviours and experiences linked to alcohol consumption, and to track long term trends in these aspects. Over 50,000 students have completed it across the five years it has been run.

You can view the research reports that detail these findings from the pilot year 2014/15 and 2015/16.

In 2016-17 a national dataset was also gathered from students at institutions not participating in the Alcohol Impact programme. This was the first year the survey was extended beyond the direct participants of Alcohol Impact, and takes a further step towards developing a full understanding of the experiences of students with alcohol during their time in higher education. The report can be found here. The national survey was run again in 2017-18 and 2018-19

During 2014/15, the pilot year for Alcohol Impact, the programme was funded by the Home Office and featured in-depth evaluation research.  You can read our final report summary from the pilot here and you can read the summary of the criteria completed by our pilot cohort.

Our impact report from 2017-18 can be found here.

During 2018 we ran two Drink Rethink pilots, a preventative approach that trains student ambassadors to use an evidence-based behaviour change tool (Identification and Brief Advice, IBA) to deliver alcohol interventions on campus. The report from our first pilot can be viewed here, the report from the second pilot can be viewed here
